Flight Operations Audits - Indonesia 2011
ASSET Aviation was contracted by a resources company to undertake in-depth audits of the Flight Operations of Asian carriers. These onsite audits involved investigating the methodologies of piloting the aircraft compared to industry best practice and manufacturer’s recommendations which stipulate how the aircraft must be flown. As well as a comparison to industry best practice, the audit was also aligned to the standards of the local Regulatory Authority. There were several levels of auditing: document review, interviews with key stakeholders and Line Observation (flying in the cockpit with active flight crews and monitoring their actions). The audit was carried out successfully and the client asked ASSET Aviation to undertake further audits for them.

The audit involved measuring and comparing the operator’s maintenance practices in great detail, including the observation of maintenance being performed in the hangar by maintenance engineers. The audit was completed successfully. BARS Auditing
ASSET Aviation has undertaken numerous audits on charter operators, generally on behalf of Resources Sector clients, since the program was fully rolled out in Australia early in 2011. BARS audits are highly comprehensive safety and reliability audits split into two major components – Flight Operations and Maintenance.
The BAR Standard, developed and managed by Flight Safety Foundation, is designed to provide one standard for operators contracted to the Resources Sector, and audit results can be used to gain contracts with numerous resources companies without the need for multiple (and varying) audits. The BARS auditing program has strict auditing plans and timelines and a demanding list of auditable elements, with full Flight Safety Foundation review of all reports and progress. The audits require two auditors for two days (one Maintenance and one Flight Operations) and complete follow-up of risk mitigation implementation by operators, before audits can be closed out.
ASSET has completed BARS audits for Australian charter operators, involving aircraft such as the Bombardier Dash 8, Embraer Brazilia, Cessna 404 Titan, the Conquest 2 (turboprop fixed wing aircraft), the Bell 206 Jetranger Helicopter and the Squirrel SC350 Helicopter.
Mat Petrenko and John Stewart are both registered as Lead Auditors for the BARS Program.
