BARS AUDITS
BARS-Member Resources companies may look to their contracted air operators to undergo yearly BARS Audits. ASSET Aviation is a BARS-Registered Auditing company. ASSET Aviation Auditors have undergone specialised BARS Audit training and are individually accredited by the Flight Safety Foundation as Lead Auditors.
What is BARS?
BARS or Basic Aviation Risk Standard Program is a joint program between the Flight Safety Foundation and the Resources Sector internationally that has created one common aviation safety standard tailored to the Resources Sector environment. The program is designed to reflect industry best practice and draw on the collective experience of numerous companies to create a pragmatic and achievable standard for all operators.
Under the BARS system, aircraft operators may only require one audit per year to service a number of BARS-member resources companies instead of undergoing multiple annual audits for various companies all with a diverse set of requirements. The process typically requires two Auditors on-site for two days. The Auditors have to meet minimum knowledge and experience criteria, undergo specialised training and meet stringent accreditation requirements.
The BARS Program is important because aviation is one of the single largest risks to safety in the Sector and one of the few activities that has the potential for double-digit fatalities. With aviation accidents continuing to cause fatalities in the Sector, this program will help move the industry further towards its goal of zero harm.
Which Companies are Involved?
The twelve founding members of Flight Safety Foundation's BARS program are: BHP Billiton, Downer EDI, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, Leighton Contractors, Lihir Gold, MMG, Morobe Mining JV, Newcrest Mining, Rio Tinto, Shell, Vale and Xstrata.
